Statewide Educational Outreach
Educational Consultants support public schools working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students using spoken/sign language and those with additional eligibilities. Consultants engage families to support of their child’s language, learning, and social growth.
ASL classes are offered in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and virtually. ASL Immersion Week occurs in July on Santa Fe’s campus. Statewide ASL Mentor services are available to families and public-school staff.
Statewide events range from formal trainings to informal learning and social gatherings.
The information presented in the training “Maximizing Hearing Levels for Students Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing” was informative and balanced. The main points were stated in several different ways and that supported my learning and maximized retention. Carla's presentation style included application examples from her own practice and I appreciated her time and effort. Thank you for offering this training!

When I moved to Las Cruces, I knew I would need mentoring so I contacted NMSD and asked if I could receive mentoring. They said, 'yes!' About a year ago I took the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) and I finally got the score I needed. I am now a licensed Educational Interpreter and it feels amazing. Having the support of NMSD's mentorship program has been very, very helpful.

Thank you so much for ASL Immersion! I'm learning ASL to support my son who is Hard of Hearing, and also because I love learning languages. I hope next year immersion can be in-person!
