Student Life at the New Mexico School for the Deaf supports the development of each student’s full potential in a safe and nurturing environment.
As a partner in each student’s education and growth at school, the program provides both residential and day students with quality ongoing access to communication, language and literacy.
NMSD’s specialized staff focuses on child development, and plan activities that promote growth in the following areas:
- Emotional and social skills
- Self-awareness and self-esteem
- Problem solving and decision making
- Appreciation for different perspectives
- Respect for diversity
Students regularly participate in workshops/mini-lessons related to the Student Development Framework. We use a positive discipline approach, which supports mutual respect, caring and responsibility for one’s behavior and choices.
We believe frequent communication and collaboration between parents and staff are key priorities to maximizing the student experience while at NMSD.
