Classes are targeted towards 1) Parents, grandparents, siblings, other family members 2) school personnel and other educational stakeholders working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Classes are interactive, challenging and fun. Instructors work hard to make learning ASL an enjoyable and beneficial experience. Ten week sessions are offered each fall and spring semesters, meeting once per week for two hours. ASL Immersion

ASL Immersion is a concentrated program in American Sign Language (ASL) that allows participants to understand how it feels to depend on one’s eyes rather than one’s ears to communicate and interact with the world. There are periods of instruction, including modeling, creative invention, mime, vocabulary, and of course, sentence structure. Students practice with each other, their teachers, members of the NMSD staff, and visiting members of the Deaf Community. With classes offered for all skill levels, participants leave with improved ability to communicate in ASL and a more complete understanding of Deaf Culture.  Two ASL Immersion programs are offered each summer at the end of July.  For more information about ASL Immersion Programs, please contact Leah Gregg at (505) 476-6400.

ASL Coach Program

NMSD’s ASL Coach Program is a service program that serves rural locations in rural New Mexico. Our coaches are hired for one year to provide ASL instructions to families and to school programs where deaf children live.
NMSD hires and places ASL Coaches to live in rural locations around the state to provide direct signed language instruction in unexpected places. The service year begins with training in August. Coaches arrive at their site locations by late August to begin teaching ASL.
