NMSD’s International Studies program allows students to learn about the world through real-life experiences. The program is designed to provide students with a better understanding of the arts, cultures, current events, geography, history, language, math, science, and the currencies of the world in which we live. Perhaps most importantly, they learn how to be good travelers and gain an appreciation for the wonderful place that we call Earth. Established in 2000, NMSD’s International Studies Program has enabled dozens of participating students to travel abroad:
2001: Switzerland, Italy and France.
2005: Finland, Sweden and Norway.
2008: Costa Rica
2010: France, Switzerland and Italy
2016: France and the Netherlands
The goals of NMSD’s International Studies Program are as follows:
- Each participating student will experience learning through traveling which heightens global and cultural understanding and increases motivation for further learning.
- Through instruction related to world travel, cultures, and history, each student will increase knowledge and literacy skills.
- Each student will develop research skills along with critical thinking skills that they will use throughout their lives.
This program is open to all motivated students 9th through 12th grade who works hard to improve their knowledge of the world and develop other academic abilities. They must exhibit an above average GPA (2.5 or above) and demonstrate model behavior.
Since 2010, the International Studies students and staff have maintained a travel blog at http://nmsdisc.blogspot.com/ during their travels abroad. Trips occur every two years in the spring.
Fundraising is a significant part of the program and provides students with experience and creativity when it comes to marketing and fund management. NMSD is committed to making sure that each student has the opportunity to go regardless of financial status.
