Technology & Arts Instruction

Theater Arts at NMSDTechnology and the Arts are highly valued at NMSD. NMSD believes in providing students with every opportunity to incorporate their own cultural values through art as well as learn about the cultures of others. Another core belief is in freedom of expression through a variety of mediums and allowing NMSD’s Deaf and hard of hearing students multiple ways to communicate through the Arts. The New Mexico State Standards for Fine Arts are followed. In addition, NMSD adheres to the Common Core State Standards for Language Arts and Mathematics as well as standards derived from other states and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) for Industrial and Technology Arts.

  • Fine Arts & Drama: NMSD’s students from early childhood through the twelfth grade take many different classes including general art classes for the younger ages and painting, drawing, graphic arts/photography, ceramics and glass-making as well as basic art classes for the older students. NMSD’s students are also exposed in a variety of ways to the dramatic arts. They learn about reading scripts, obtain backstage and set-design skills in addition to how to perform and improvise. The art program also supports the annual Winter Variety Show as well as the annual Spring Play production.

  • Industrial Arts:From the upper elementary through the 12th grade, NMSD’s students are offered basic woodworking courses. Higher level woodworking courses are provided to high school students. NMSD’s students are also given the opportunity to take special courses such as construction and furniture making when offered. Basic and advanced welding are also offered to high school students.
  • Technology Arts: NMSD students start taking technology classes in Kindergarten and they receive ongoing technology classes until middle school. Some students also begin to learn about programming and coding at this level. At the middle school and high school levels, NMSD students receive specialized classes such as Using Productivity Programs (e.g. Microsoft Excel),  Basic Computing, Film Making, TV Production, Graphic Arts/Photography (taught in conjunction with Fine Arts) and Yearbook Development.
